The Amelia Project, Giving Wings to Research, was created in 1998 by consumers in order to impact and expedite the breast cancer research agenda in Indiana.
The project is designed to improve the quality of care for Indiana women by fostering a statewide community of scientists and clinicians, who in partnership with the consumers, are working toward the eradication of breast cancer. The program brings senior and junior scientists, clinical investigators, and students from six different Indiana universities and colleges together on a neutral field under the consumer umbrella.
The Catherine Peachey Fund and the Central Indiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen underwrote the meeting for the first 12 years. Volunteers of the Peachey Fund and Komen facilitate and host the program. The meeting is now developed with the Department of Continuing Education at the IU School of Medicine. Continuing medical education credits are availalbe to attendees.
The Amelia Project seeks to serve the following populations:
- the women of Indiana who are screened, diagnosed, and treated by the scientists and physicians who do research, practice and study in Indiana
- the graduate student population who can be enlightened to the challenge and inspired to careers in basic science research in breast cancer by offering them the opportunity to work, learn and collaborate with the best scientists in the state
- the scientific and medical communities in Indiana who work or who can be encouraged to work in the field of basic science research in breast cancer.
One of the truly unique aspects of this meeting is that it is free to the attendees. It is a unique opportunity to view world-class science without traveling outside of Indiana.
