Two Upcoming Events to Foster Idea Exchange Among Indiana Cancer Researchers
Indiana University Cancer Center/Purdue Cancer Center Retreat April 21
The 2007 Indiana University Cancer Center and Purdue Cancer Center annual retreat will be held on Saturday, April 21, in Lebanon, Indiana. This year’s retreat will focus on target tissues and encourage clinical and basic science interactions between cancer investigators from Purdue, Notre Dame, and Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses of Indiana University.
“We hope to link clinical scientists andbasic scientists together to develop collaborative studies, ultimately with SPORE proposals resulting from the interaction,” says Jim Klaunig, PhD, associate director of strategic partnerships.
SPOREs (Specialized Programs of Research Excellence) are specialized center grants from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) that promote interdisciplinary research and move basic research findings from the laboratory to clinical settings, involving both cancer patients and populations at risk of cancer.
Cancer Research Day: May 2
The 2007 Indiana University Cancer Center Cancer Research Day will be held May 2. The annual event includes a scientific poster session and keynote address. It aims to increase understanding and awareness of Indiana University Cancer Center research endeavors and encourage collaboration with other cancer research institutions in Indiana.
Students, fellows and faculty conducting cancer research at IUPUI, IU-Bloomington, Purdue University and Lilly Research Labs are invited to present their current cancer research efforts. The scientific session will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Medical Sciences building atrium.
Dr. Curtis C. Harris from the National Cancer Institute Human Carcinogenesis Laboratory will be the keynote speaker from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Since 1981, Dr. Harris has served as chief of the Laboratory of Human Carcinogenesis and chief of its Molecular Genetics and Carcinogenesis Section. He also is clinical professor of medicine and oncology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. The outstanding scientific contributions of Dr. Harris to the fields of molecular carcinogenesis and molecular epidemiology of human cancer has placed him at the international forefront. His research on environmental carcinogenesis, cancer risk factors and molecular genetics of human carcinogenesis has significantly impacted the field of cancer risk assessment and our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of human cancer.
