Matei Awarded Department of Medicine Young Investigator Award

Daniela Matei, MD, assistant professor of medicine, has received the 2007 Department of Medicine Young Investigators Award in recognition of her basic and clinical research in ovarian cancer clinical and laboratory research.

The Young Investigator Award is chosen annually by the vice chairs and chair of the Department of Medicine. It is based on outstanding achievements in research judged by successfully obtaining research grants of high caliber, motivation of the investigator topursue even more funding, evidence of emerging excellence in the investigators chosen field, and outstanding publication record.

 “Dr. Matei has programmatically approached ovarian cancer with exciting new ideas in the laboratory and works with the gynecology oncology group to ensure her patients have access to up-to-date clinical trials,” remarks Sharon Moe, vice chair of research for the Department of Medicine, who served on the award selection committee.

Dr. Matei attended medical school in her native country of Romania. She then completed her internship and residency in New York and her hematology and oncology fellowship at University of California in Los Angeles, where she was the recipient of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grant. Since her arrival at Indiana University in 2002, she has been principal investigator on several important grants, including an Amgen Oncology Institute Award in 2004, American Cancer Society Mentored Scholar Award in 2005 and Veterans Administration Merit Award in 2007. She is a member of the IU Simon Cancer Center’s Experimental and Development Therapeutics Program and has over 12 active clinical, many of which are investigator-initiated.
