Over the past ten months, the exterior facade of the new clinical facility, to be named the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, has been taking shape. Exterior windows limestone and brick have been installed at a rapid pace. The building exterior will be completed by the end of July 2007, with the interior on target for completion a year later for a June 2008 opening.

Interior construction will continue at a rapid pace. Framing of the walls is nearly complete, with drywall as well as plumbing, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), electrical, mechanical, and fire protection systems following immediately behind.

The exterior site work will recommence construction toward the middle of the summer. The pedestrian bridge connecting the Vermont Street Garage with the new cancer center over Michigan Street will begin with the work on the Vermont Street Garage first. The contractors will build the bridge in sections on the ground and lift them into place so as to minimize the length of time that Michigan Street will be restricted.

Activities slated for May and June 2007:

  • Completion of the middle stair/elevator tower
  • Continuing installation of the roofing systems
  • Continue to install metal wall studs on all levels
  • Continue installation and completion of the curtainwall and glazing systems
  • Continue installation and completion of the exterior precast panels on the east structure
  • Begin installation of final finishes on the interior
  • Continue installation of the elevators
  • Connect permanent electrical power to the new building
