The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer sets record: more than $1 million raised for breast cancer

The 14th annual Vera Bradley Classic raised $1,045,250 during a women’s golf and tennis tournament, held in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on June 2-4. More than 600 golf and tennis players and 300 volunteers came together to have fun, increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for research on behalf of the Vera Bradley Foundation. All money raised at the event supports breast cancer research at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.

Big pink ribbons lined the streets of downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana, to raise awareness for breast cancer and set the stage for this annual event. The ribbons were personalized and purchased in honor or in memory of a loved one.

The funds raised at the 2007 Classic will advance promising breast cancer research through recruitment of the best scientific investigators and support of state-of-the-art shared facilities that make this research possible, said Stephen D. Williams, MD, director of the IU Simon Cancer Center, and Linda Malkas, PhD, Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology.

The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer is committed to eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by providing financial support for research and research-related projects. Since being established in 1998, more than $4 million has been raised and two major endowments have been donated to the IU School of Medicine to support the Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology and to establish the Vera Bradley Center for Breast Cancer Research.
