Chemotherapy drugs and special instructions for patients
Cisplatin
May cause:
- Hearing loss (Ototoxicity)
- Kidney (Renal) impairment
- Second cancers (Secondary malignancy)
- Abnormal concentrations of lipids (fats) or lipoproteins (fat-protien complexes) in the blood (Dyslipidemia)
- Inadequate functioning of the testes or ovaries (Hypogonadism)
High-dose Methotrexate
May cause:
- Osteopenia, osteoporosis (A condition of bone in which decreased calcification, decreased density, or reduced mass occurs)
- Renal and liver impairment
Doxorubicin
(usually in the range of 450-600 mg/m2, given with cardioprotectant dexrazoxane) May cause:
- Cardiotoxicity (heart complications)
- Secondary malignancy
Depending on the protocol, some osteosarcoma patients also received the following drugs:
Ifosphamide
(usually in the range of 27-60 mg/m2) May cause:
- Secondary malignancy
- Bladder dysfunction, malignancy
- Renal impairment
- Hypogonadism
Etoposide
May cause:
- Secondary malignancy
