Things to know about After your Treatment

Late effects are complications that may arise with your child's health after cancer treatment due to the types of treatment used to combat the cancer. These treatments kill cancerous cells, but they may also damage healthy cells. This damage can cause late side effects and problems in your child's health. For this reason, your son or daughter should have routine follow-up care and testing so problems can be caught earlier rather than later. The late effects of surgery and radiation will depend on the specific location of your child's tumor.

Wilms is treated with various combinations of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation based on the tumor's stage at diagnosis and tissue characteristics under the microscope (histology). Late side effects vary according to the specific treatment your child received.
