Chemotherapy Treatments for Wilms Tumor

Surgical Procedures

Chemotherapy is the medication given to patients to treat cancer. Tumor cells divide uncontrollably. Chemotherapy kills tumor cells by interfering with the way that these cells can divide.

Your child is treated according to a specific protocol regimen that is tailored to your child's tumor stage. Check with your child's physician if you are still unsure as to which stage of tumor that your child has.

There are a few different ways that chemotherapy is given:

  • Intravenously (IV): A needle is inserted into the vein and the chemotherapy medications flow from an IV bag into the bloodstream. A central venous catheter, which is a tube that is placed into a vein in your child's chest around the time of surgery, can be used to directly insert the medication into the vein without sticking your child with a needle.
  • Orally: Some non-chemo medications, like anti-nausea medications, are given in pill or liquid form to be swallowed.
