Chemical Synthesis & Organic Drug Lead Development Policies & Procedures
The services provided by the core are unique to each investigator-initiated request. Thus, the following outline descrbies the common steps invovlved in the fulfillment of a typical custom synthesis inquiry/order.
Step 1: Initial Evaluation of a Synthesis Request
Upon receipt of a Custom Synthesis Request Form from an investigator (via e-mail to: synthesiscore@chem.iupui.edu), core personnel will:
- Evaluate the request and develop a tentative synthetic strategy
- Report back to the initiating investigator as quickly as possible
Step 2: Generation of a Custom Synthesis Proposal
After an initial evaluation and consultation with the requesting investigator the core will:
- Develop a detailed Custom Synthesis Proposal. Proposal development involves thorough scientific literature and patent searching and a determination of the availability and costs of key chemicals and reagents from commercial vendors; a detailed breakdown of all costs per step of the reaction scheme will be provided and the desired product quality and purity (QC) will be defined along with the methods to ensure their attainment (e.g., NMR, LC-MS, etc.).
Step 3: Agreement of Terms
Upon investigator acceptance of the proposal generated in Step 2, the core will:
- Prepare a final written agreement for the investigator finalizing all costs, time requirements, agreed-upon product amount(s), and purities
- Investigator acceptance of the agreement is required to proceed
Step 4: Synthesis, Quality Control & Delivery
Upon investigator acceptance of the agreement, the core will:
- Commence synthetic work and evaluate product quality
- Enter and store compound information into a core database for future investigator access and convenience
- Package and deliver the final compounds in an investigator-specified fashion (investigators often desire specific vials, amounts, aliquots, etc.) along with a QC Report, including a description of the compounds, the amounts being provided, and their purities
Step 5: Investigator Payment for Services Rendered by the Core
- IU-Affiliated Investigators: An internal IU account number will be requested during the Agreement of Terms (Step 3)
- Non-IU-Affiliated Investigators/Clients: A “Fee for Service” agreement will be put in place; for further details, please consult the core director
Step 6: Acknowledgement of Services
We kindly request that any work that results in publications from the use of the core and its products should appropriately acknowledge the Chemical Synthesis & Drug Lead Development Core, the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, and the IU Simon Cancer Center.
