Bridge Funding

In general, the IU Simon Cancer Center will not be responsible for bridge funding of investigators, as this is a responsibility of the department in which the faculty member has a primary appointment.  However, on occasion the cancer center will entertain requests for up to 12 months of funding.

Procedure:  The investigator will prepare a request that will include a detailed budget and justification, recent publications, a list of pending funding applications, recent summary statements, and a brief narrative stating the reason for the request and addressing the criteria shown below. The request should be sent to the attention of Mark Kelley, PhD, associate director of basic research, at mkelley@iupui.edu.

The investigator must also have their project mapped according to the IU Simon Cancer Center Translational Research Acceleration Collaboration (ITRAC) mechanism prior to review by senior leaders. ITRAC Project Manager Mary Murray (memurray@iupui.edu) will facilitate the mapping process.

Cancer center senior leaders will review the request and make the funding decision.  If granted, the investigator will provide quarterly reports to the cancer center.

Evaluation criteria:

  1. Potential for future cancer research funding
  2. Collaborative activity
  3. Past funding and publication history
  4. Pending applications
  5. Recent favorable summary statements
  6. Fiscal responsibility of investigator and strong budget justification
  7. Participation of the primary department in the bridge funding plan.
